York has a lot of events and festivals, this weekend saw the Roman Festival, and on Sunday the York Carnival. We decided to go into York for the day on Sunday and as expected it was extremely busy. Most people know the main landmark of York - the Minster, but just opposite the south entrance is this solitary Roman Column, remains of the headquarters building of the Roman legionary fortress that were discovered underneath where York Minster stands.

Clifford Tower, York.

Yep, we went back into York today for lunch, so this isn't a cheat photo.

In between all the rain and wind and dropping the kids off for the weekend, we managed to pop into York. I love York, and feel very lucky to live so close to it. My photo of the day then is of one of the three bridges in the centre that span the River Ouse. This is the Skeldergate Bridge, built in 1878 -1880 and until 1914 was a toll bridge.

If you ever visit York and park on St Georges car park you can walk under part of this wonderful bridge to get into town, rather than take your life in your hands getting across the very busy road.

Below are some of the tree's that line the bank of the Ouse just by the bridge. You'll notice the lack of grass, all down to the numerous times the river breaks it's banks over the winter (and has to be said the summer!)

Yesterday afternoon I took myself off shopping in York, with trusty camera packed in my handbag. York Minster would be an obvious choice to photograph, but there are so many small and beautiful churches around the centre. On my way back to the car I walk by All Saints on Pavement and, as it was just starting to go dark, it was lit up.
The Church is the Guild and Civic church of York. It is also the Regimental church of the Royal Dragoon Guards.
I'm sure York will feature in more that one of my 365 photo's during 2009.
